Slumdog Millionaire DVD

Slumdog Millionaire was the success story of 2008, topping box office charts all over the globe and winning some major awards.

It is a basic rags to riches story, set in Mumbai and following the story of a young boy who goes through a series of trials and tribulations.

Jamal is a pauper who loses his mother, and strives to be reunited with the girl he loves in spite of overwhelming forces of difficulty around him.

The ‘through line’ of the film is a game show – Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – on which Jamal is a contestant, and he has success in the show thanks to a remarkable amount of luck.

Critics have raved about the film because it ‘tells it like it is’ and gives Westerners an insight into Indian culture and exposure to true poverty.

But on the other hand many have pointed out that the film is exploitative in essence, and seems to breezily gloss over the fact that thousands of people suffer and die in poverty every day.

Some have taken umbrage with the happy ending of the film, and have suggested that it serves the purpose of making the West feel good about itself because it has glimpsed Indian poverty but everything works out ok in the end.

The Slumdog Millionaire DVD is slated for release later this year.
